#1 Way to know students were Engaged— They remember.
There is no Learning Without Remembering. - Socrates
Retention is the key, secret ingredient, to effective teaching and learning. We both know that.
Yet we so quickly forget.
It's not about dumping more data. It's about remembering.
If you want them to remember forever— Teach them to use mnemonics.
Name the Great Lakes. (H O M E S) - See?
Mnemonics instinctively shake hands with the brain and make a deal to remember.
So, after a lesson, crowdsource ideas from the class to come up with clickbait titles, mnemonic devices, slogans, tag lines, etc . . .
Created = Remembered.
(Then next year you can reuse it and give them credit. Turns last year’s class into a rockstar team that all want to copy.
That’s Motivating. Teambuilding.)
Or Google it.
Or AI.
Ask ChatGpt to - “Create 10 mnemonics for the first 5 presidents.” Pick the best.
We both know that Data Dumping more, and faster, is a waste of everyone’s time and energy. 2% sticks.
Plus, it overwhelms, demotivates, and discourages students.
Imagine perpetually being stuck in a Tech Training. Brutal.
Data Dumping is just pouring water faster through a colander.
Don’t do that.
Do this—
Create, and use, more Stories. Stories are fun and stick. Reusable.
Let the kids help.
Research shows - Students remember 63% of stories and 5% of lectures.
PS - Don’t mistake my encouraging messages for naivete. Improving our Engagement Skills absolutely improves student retention. We both personally know that to be true.
And—- Repetition is still vital for long-term memory. Most complete memories are created a spoonful at a time. The key then becomes plugging the holes in the colander. (Improving retention.)
I wish you well, my friend!
