Instinctively Important Hooks

It all begins with an idea.

Great Teachers Partner with Human Nature.

All of the above things are Instinctively Important to the brain, automatically Hook its attention, and Make Things Stick.

All of the above things are Instinctively UN-Important to the brain, automatically Turn It Off and Will Not Stick.

When you have a large amount of information that students need to know… (or you need to learn!) use the following Instinctively Important Hooks and Techniques to Make Things Stick.

  • Boil it down to bare bones

  • Create essential key bullet points

  • Less is more. Important stuff, no fluff.

  • Chunk it - teach smaller sections w/ brain breaks mixed in, then use…

  • Variety in delivery, like…

  • Mnemonic hacks to remember - Rhyme, Alliteration, Acronym, Acrostic, Say it Aloud, Physical Movement (pantomime), etc…

  • Small groups discuss intriguing questions about content & applications, then create a consensus statement, slogan, motto, logo, or image.

  • Read only the 1st sentence of each paragraph. Then triads predict for 1 minute to fill gaps. Teacher corrects during whole class speed-round discussion.

  • Take Pictionary-ish notes

  • Make up weird words that convey concisely and visually. (Pictionary-ish)

  • Ask kids for ideas, suggestions for weird words, and memory helpers (Mnemonics)

  • Ask them to help you create a rhyme, or acrostic, or acronym, or picture, or weird word, etc. Have them teach it to the class, or put it into a suggestion box. Then just say, "I got this anonymous suggestion that is really good to help us remember…"   (create positive competition?)

I wish you well my friend!
