Research shows that gestures grab attention and focus, clarify understanding, and even improve memory of the info. For the listener, And the Speaker.

Gesturing helps both parties access memories. So, while it helps others remember what you say, it also helps you speak more quickly and effectively!

Researchers Holler and Beatie found that gestures can increase the value of our spoken message by 60%!

Engaging teachers and speakers know the importance of using hand gestures. Leaders also tend to use specific hand gesture patterns.

Quick Tips for Peak Effectiveness:

• Keep it smallish. About shoulder to waist size. Bigger is distracting.

• Numbers - Show it with fingers. “3 things . . . #1 is . . .” Helps the brain immensely. 

• Smoother is better than jerky.

• “A little bit …”  Show it with thumb and index finger.

• A Clenched Hand shows intensity. “This is very important!”

• The Everything Gesture or Clean Slate - Sweep your hand across an imaginary table. “This works for Everything…” or “We’re starting over. Clean slate.” 

• Small, Medium, Large - Open hand, palm down. Show Waist height, chest height, and shoulder height.

• Pointing (don’t). Instead, gesture with an open hand, palm up. 

  “You move over here. And you move over here.”
