They Forget Everything
Without Motivation to learn, teachers are pouring water through a colander.
Zero retention.
Real Learning, (retention), takes work.
Working requires Motivation.
No motivation = no work.
No work = no retention (learning).
Our typical solution to the colander - Pour more. Faster. Longer. Louder.
We are trying to solve the wrong problem.
Think about it.
Too little information, is not the problem. We all know it.
Retention is the problem. Real learning is the problem.
“Without remembering, there is no learning.” - Aristotle
Convincing my brain (motivating it) to invest its vital energy to think about, process, learn, and remember new information— that takes something Important. To me. To my brain. Personally.
You are exactly the same.
We all are.
Yet we pretend it isn’t so, and just keep pouring more, faster, louder.
(You’ve read this far because these things are important, for you. Personally.)
Think about your thoughts just now.
Are your emotions engaged a tiny bit?
Your curiosity?
Might your mind come back later, and think again about this idea?
Emotions. Curiosity.
These important things are chunky.
Motivating.
Retained.
In the colander of the mind.
Like our first kiss so long ago. Remember?
Irrelevant things flood right through.
No matter how much, or how fast we pour.
“Where did I put my keys?”
When we base our teaching on creating curiosity and emotions
Retention happens automatically.
These are chunky bits that our brains instinctively collect.
And keep.
